The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is an Institute of National Importance governed by the act of Parliament titled NIMHANS Act, 2012. This institute is multidisciplinary institute for patient care, academic pursuit and cutting edge research in the field of mental health and neurosciences. The Central Government recognized its eminent academic position, growth and contributions, and declared it a ‘Deemed University’ in 1994. In 2012, NIMHANS was conferred the status of an ‘Institute of National Importance’.

Community Psychiatry Services
The Community Psychiatry Unit handles varied activities ranging from training, research, capacity building, outreach programs (camps) to community based rehabilitation at the Institute. The Unit collaborates across State and Central Governments in providing support for policy making, strengthening human resources, etc under the National Mental Health Program on project mode. A state of the art multidisciplinary team mans the Unit providing service par excellence in the field of public mental health.
Primary Care Psychiatry
The Primary Care Psychiatry Program (PCPP) is an initiative from the Tele Medicine Centre, National Institute of Mental Health And Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru, India which has now evolved into a diploma course as ‘Diploma in Primary Care Psychiatry (DPCP)’ as a prototype course. Out of the pilot experience in Mandya evolved the DPCP course which is a 1 year digitally driven online module in addition to a 10 day onsite course at NIMHANS.
Telemedicine
The Telemedicine Centre, NIMHANS is a recast of the Telemedicine Network Project of Karnataka which was introduced in 2001 with a hope of bridging the gap between speciality care and remote underserved villages. The Centre has been a pioneer in the field of mental health since its inception in 2007. During the first wave of COVID 19 pandemic, it has contributed in designing the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines 2020 along with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India and thereby making clinical practice possible amidst the contagious disease spread.
Forensic Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry started the Forensic Psychiatry Services in the year 2015 at NIMHANS with an vision to start Centre for Forensic Psychiatry. The Forensic team consists of six psychiatry consultants with immense experience in the field, one post-doctoral fellow, one senior resident and two junior resident. The team has provided Forensic Psychiatry Services to both in-patients and out-patients along with research and academic activities for the further development of the services.
